Pit Bulls and Neighbors

My Sunday evening sucked.  Two pit bulls (that I didn't even know were in the neighborhood) escaped through their owner's fence (across the street).  Apparently, there are enough missing boards to let the Hulk through.  Anyway, they tried to attack a man walking his dog on a leash. My friend, Eric, was able to grab the two dogs by their spike collars and pull them down. He's a big guy, 6'3" tall and 210 lbs.  We got the dogs into my garage. They attempted to get through the passage way door into my home but thankfully I have a good bolt lock.  Called the police/animal control. They took the dogs away for "Running at large" and now I'm the bitch of the neighborhood cause I turned "the puppies" in.  The people who own the dogs are 6 young men who live in the house......  Last night, the neighbor girl down the street couldn't wait to run her mouth and tell Jorge,  Jose and Juan who turned them in....pointing to me.  Never mind she could have been a victim, or her poodle she walks on a leash.   It's not illegal to have pit bulls in my county or my neighborhood.

Now, I am fairly worried about retalaliation...  I am going to keep my pets in my basement each day rather than the pet door thing....the funny thing is, I was asked if I wanted to swear a complaint for vicious dog and I said no....just the running at large.....so they can get their dogs back by paying 200.00 to the shelter.

I just don't get it....do you?

It is a difficult situation. Perhaps given the right circumstances they could have done bodily harm.

I think you acted in the best interests of everyone. Those 6 young men just need to realize that regardless of the breed, their dogs shouldn't haven't gotten out.

It's a charged topic. It depends on what you mean by "tried to attack." The fact that someone was able to pull the dogs off indicates to me that they were not really "trying to attack," but doing what many dogs do instinctively, which is run to what they're interested in/fear and do a lot of bluffing. If a pit bull is intent on attacking, it *will* attack, and the only thing that's going to stop it is if you somehow make it unconscious. It doesn't sound like that happened here. I feel bad for the dog owners here too, because it can be *extremely* stressful when your dog's actions scare someone, are mispercieved, or scare you because you don't know if your dog is really trying to bite someone. And pit bulls have such a negative stigma because so many people train them to be violent. I rescued a pit bull mix from a shelter and she charged a kid once who was running at her and screaming. She didn't bite the kid, but she did run at him growling, which scared him. However, both of my other dogs (border collie and a mutt) would have done the same thing if a kid was running at her and screaming, but since this dog looks a lot more intimidating, the experience was much worse.

I don't know. I feel bad for you, and I feel bad for the dogs. I wish people would stop training pit bulls to be violent. It results in so much suffering.

Well now that really sucks! You did the whole neighborhood a favor, and you and your friend were at risk in subduing the dogs! Retaliation??! For what?? Maybe just let them eat the poodle next time!

I hope it all blows over and the owners come to their senses. Hang in there.

Oh, I get it, but I don't like it. It's the same NOT MY FAULT mentality--blame it on someone else that drives me insane. You think that you're doing the right thing, and then idiots like those turn it around. Seriously, Cyndy, watch your back and keep Eric around!

The owners are very lucky you did what you did for someone else might have actually have gotten rid of the dogs or you can bet they would have filed the complaint for vicious dogs.

So many people just like to see how much turmoil they can cause others today which is so very sad.

Welcome back to the blogging world you have been missed very much. Stop by and visit me when you have time for I always miss you.

I am so happy to see things going better for you deserve this happiness my friend.
